Jay Mauney -Team Owner/Crew Chief,
Driver Coach
Crew
Experience
James "Jay" Mauney, Team Manager of The
Motorsports Group, has been involved in Motorsports and Racing
Accessory Sales and Marketing for more than twenty years. Originally
from North Carolina, he has been a Florida resident since 1989.
Mauney crewed The 24 Hours LeMans in 2000 with MCR, was Team Manager
for Orbit Racing for two Grand Am Rolex seasons, where he was an
acting team manager for The Daytona 24 hour Rolex, and the ALMS
Sebring 12 hour event in 2001. At the end of 2002 Mauney developed a
plan to get himself on the track as a driver and completed the
development of a multilevel driver training program for
up-and-coming drivers and gentlemen drivers looking for coaching and
advanced in-car training.
Mauney used the experiences he gained as a pro-level team manager to
bring together an exceptional team of professional crew members and
coaches. From 2003 - 2005 his efforts created a team win record not
exceeded by any Pro -Am team in the country. The level of team
professionalism and the breadth of educational programs provided to
customers, now racing in SCCA World Challenge, KONI Cup, Grand-Am
Rolex GT and Rolex DP, were not and have not been exceeded in the
sport. see team record.
During the 2006 and 2007 seasons Mauney and
the TMG staff moved into pro level racing running a two Riley and
Scott Daytona Prototypes in the Grand-Am Rolex series. Mauney acted
as Crew Chief in the final eight races of the season 2006 season and
brought home 5 Trueman Awards with the privateer team. The TMG club
racing program saw the team take podium finishes in three of three
events entered. John Jackson, Mauney's co-driver, went on to
win the 2007 SCCA South East Divisional DP class Championship. The
Riley and Scott cars were merged into the AS class in SCCA and
dominated during the four season entries.
During the 2008 season Mauney worked with
Jackson on a suspension and engine developmental program with a BMW
E30 and collected multiple race wins in the ITA Florida Endurance
Series Championship. Though not a full season effort, Mauney was
still able to collect all but one pole to win the FES P1
Championship in his BMW M3.
During the 2009 season TMG worked to exceed
their previous levels of successes in club racing. Though the total
quantity of race entries were not as high as previous seasons, the
Wins were all there. TMG dominated the NASA German Touring Series in
GTS3 and GTS2. Ivan BeRossy worked throughout the season within the
TMG coaching program under Mauney, and combined with an intense car
development program, crushed all competitors to win the 2009
Championship. Jay Goldfarb also dominated in the NASA German Touring
Series winning the GTS2 class. Within the ranks of SCCA, Mauney
managed rookie driver Paul Middleton to a P1 Florida Region
Championship. Middleton took pole in his first rookie season race
and went on to take wins in both the P1 regional series and the P1
Endurance series.
Driving Experience
During the 2003 season, which was his rookie year, Mauney had a
string of twenty-six straight podium finishes, with eight overall
victories, twelve first-in-class finishes and a tenth place Grand
American Rolex GT finish. He set down fastest laps to win eight pole
positions, set fastest race lap at Homestead Speedway and as a
rookie driver managed and drove for a two team entry in the SCCA
Kumho Tropical 12 Hour event at Homestead Speedway taking home first
and third places. That year Mauney also won the SCCA FES
Championship, led class points race in the PBOC Florida Series and
ranked in the top ten Nationally in the BMWCCA Series. He finished
the season with only one mechanical DNF.
In the 2004 season Mauney again dominated the
SCCA FES Series. With 18 total team entries, and running the first 7
races of the season in the team's slower Level I trainer car, Mauney
took home 16 podiums, 12 first in class wins, missed only one SCCA
pole position, and had zero DNF's through the entire season. His
non-pole start saw a run through 53 grid positions to take an
overall win. Mauney was also appointed to the Florida Region SCCA
Board of Directors that same year.
In the 2005 season Mauney won his third
straight SCCA FES Championship. With a total of 12 entries, Mauney
took home 10 podium finishes, again taking all but one pole
position. His team also won the SCCA Kumho Tropical 12 hour at
Homestead where he put the team car on the pole and took first in
class and 5th overall in PBOC's Winterfest 6 hour Enduro at Sebring.
Mauney also broke the SCCA class track records at Daytona, Sebring
and Homestead during the season. Mauney was elected into the
position of Publicity Director for the Florida Region SCCA that
year.
During the 2006 season Mauney crewed and
eventually stepped into the Crew Chief position for a gentleman
driver program where he managed two Riley and Scott Daytona
Prototype Pontiac and BMW powered racecars in the prestigious Grand
American DP Rolex series. The season was a success with 5 of the
team's 8 starts under Mauney's guidance ending with a Trueman Award
finish. With so much time invested in the DP program Mauney's only
personal driving entries during 2006 included the PBOC Winterfest 6
hour at Sebring where he finished 4th in class and the Kumho
Tropical 12 Hour in which Mauney placed the Orpan Racing Porsche on
the pole.
During the remainder of the 2007 season Mauney
concentrated his efforts on the development of TMG's Motorsports
Marketing Programs and Driver Training Programs. He did a great deal
of private coaching and competed in the SCCA Florida Endurance
Series where he was a co-driver with John Jackson. The team took
podium finishes in three of three events entered. Jackson went on to
win the SCCA South East Divisional DP Championship. Mauney remained
on the Board of Directors for the Florida Region SCCA and continued
the implementation of innovative and award winning marketing
programs including digital format newsletters, online registration,
corner worker support programs, cash race purses and Performance
Driving Programs. Mauney raised over $100,000 in corporate
sponsorship for the region from 2005 - 2007 and continued his
efforts to keep grassroots racing exciting. The outstanding
improvements within the Florida Region were recognized, as the Club
received the SCCA's most prestigious National recognition award,
"Jumbo Region Achievement Award" in 2007.
During the 2008 season Mauney worked with
Jackson to win multiple races in the ITA Florida Endurance Series
Championship. Work continued on the building of the new TMG race car
rental fleet. Though not a full season effort, Mauney was still able
to win the FES P1 Championship. Mauney continued his work with the
SCCA and although nominated to serve a 3rd 2 year term, he withdrew
his effort for reelection to be able to focus fully on TMG Facility
development and completion of the TMG Fleet.
During the 2009 season Mauney's TMG team
drivers collected 3 Championships - SCCA P1, NASA GTS2 and NASA GTS3. Mauney was 4 for 4 on podium
finishes as a driver but did not collect enough points in any one series to
bring home a personal team championship. The season was however not
without fanfare as Mauney along with Ed Bancalari won the 2009 USRA
"Sand Blast Pro Rally", largest Pro Rally in North America, in their
Subaru WRX Impreza. The team dominated 6 of 7 event stages, with
win margins exceeding 1 minute and the single stage which they lost
by a mere 1 second.
For the present 2010 season Mauney continues with his primary focus
on Team TMG drivers and their development and presently crews Ivan
BeRossy who at mid season has wrapped up the NASA GTS4 championship.
Mauney is presently building a Nissan 350z, a V8 BMW E36 and
completing the development of a Mini Cooper S track car as well as
two new TMG Rental cars.
Mauney also acquired the dealership for the highly touted Virtual GT
Driving Simulator and is the distributor for the state of Florida.
He has fully integrated the Virtual GT into all his driver training
programs and has developed a sales force of five with trainers in
Jacksonville, Orlando, Jupiter and Miami.
The race season again not without fanfare as
Mauney along with Ed Bancalari won the 2010 USRA
"Sand Blast Pro Rally", largest Pro Rally in North America, in their
Subaru WRX Impreza. The team again dominated 6 of 7 event stages, with
win margins exceeding 1 minute losing first place honors only in the
first stage of this world class event.
Mauney has held driving instructor ratings with
CHIN Motorsports, NASA, Porsche Club of America, Porsche Owners
Club, Porsche BMW Owners Club and both the Central and Florida
Region SCCA. He is the lead instructor for TMG's Level III programs
and has been a licensed racer with BMWCCA, SCCA, Grand Am Cup, Grand
Am Rolex and earned an FIA license 2003. He currently holds a
National level SCCA racing license, NASA Road Race License and a
USRA Rally License as well as a Grand-Am Rolex and
FIA racing license.
When at the track you will find Mauney working
with each crew member in their designated area of expertise to pull
together the best engine set up, suspension set up, coaching plan,
and driver line ups to ensure the continuity of TMG's winning
performance.
