"Mini Takes the States" 2008
Mini owners and enthusiasts came together at Homestead Miami Speedway to kick off the BMW Mini Cooper four-city tour.

"Mini Takes The States", The MTTS held this past June at Homestead Speedway was an event that had an atmosphere of part circus and part race weekend, and certainly met it's objective to provide Mini Cooper owners customer appreciation weekend of fun. It also turned out to be an impressive promotional stunt as well. The fun will continue with automobile manufacturer BMW spending the summer months visiting three more U.S. cities celebrating the Mini Cooper cult and raising money for the charity, Motoring Hearts, which aids in placing volunteers with charities of interest.

The kick off event for the "Mini takes the States" was held at Miami Homestead Speedway and saw more than 500 Mini Coopers participate in the weekend of activities. The Motorsports-Group used the opportunity to promote their relationship with Ferrea Racing component and specifically TMG's use of Ferrea's complete line of Mini Cooper and BMW engine components. TMG owner, Jay Mauney said, "As I handed out, well actually Mini owners took more than 100 of our promo brochures from me like they were $100 dollar bills. I have been around racers for 15 years and they are enthusiast but these Mini people are the best crazy I've ever seen!" "Their excitement over the R & D that Ferrea and Cogsworth Engines invested into the racing Cooper valve train components that TMG offers was very encouraging." Of course contracting to build a race motor for one of these crazies was the best part of the weekend for me." Mauney added, "I have a feeling I might be looking for a Mini myself after hanging around this group for two days."

The cult collaboration actually began Friday evening, as more than 500 Mini Cooper drivers from all over the Southeast flooded the streets of Miami and then Bicentennial Park, for a party which featured an outdoor screening of the film National Treasure 2 as well as the airing of the local Minis of Miami club promo video.

More Mini owners and enthusiasts met up again on Saturday morning at Homestead Miami Speedway, where the events true circus environment exploded into action. Racing legend Rauno "The Flying Finn" Aaltonen was on site throughout the weekend, meeting and greeting fans, as well as sharing motoring stories from his past.

The list of event sponsors mirrored those that would be if there was a Formula 1 USA with names like Automobile, Car and Driver, European Car, Grassroots, Motor Trend, and Road & Track Magazines. Men’s Health and Outside Magazine were also present sponsoring go kart races and Best Life Magazine provided Free Massages. Live Music on Rolling Stone Music Stage was sponsored of course by Rolling Stone / Spin Magazines.

The autocross courses was intensely competitive, but the highlight for the weekend was the parade laps around Homestead race track. The days activities were rounded out with a special performance by singer-songwriter Michelle Branch.

As the weekend wrapped up on Sunday evening, participating Mini owners got behind the wheel and embarked on the Flying Finn Miami to Boston Rally, a choreographed road trip north to the next city on the "Mini Takes the States 2008 Tour". Mauney/Jackson take two more podiums.  Finish Second in class Saturday and 2nd overall Sunday

The MOTORSPORTS-GROUP Team driver's Jay Mauney and John Jackson dominated the ITA class at the SCCA Double Enduro weekend at Miami-Homestead International Speedway.  The team, competing in Jackson's TMG E30 2.7 liter BMW, took class podiums in both Saturday's and Sunday's 1.5 Hour FES Enduros and stunned their competitors with a second overall finish on Sunday.

Due to timing and scoring issues The Motorsports-Group entry was, along with several other competitors, pushed to the back of the starting grid pack.  Mauney said, "I really don't get upset when things like this happen but it does fire me up.  When I heard the news I pulled a Babe Ruth and claimed I would give the car back [to Jackson] in 5th place and I meant overall.  Of course I would not mention the bold claim but that's how it worked out."  Mauney took The Motorsports Group entry from 43 on the grid to 5th on a rain soaked course with a slipping clutch in less then forty minutes.  During his stint Mauney set the fifth fastest race lap during the event.  Mauney added, "There was a problem with the crank case ventilation system and the over flow was leaking into the clutch area and really made for some tough driving or we certainly would have moved up further during the wet stint.  But our rain set up was so perfect for the slippery track conditions that the clutch issue did not end our day.  It [the rain set up] really showed in the braking zones where our ITA car put a hurting on some of the higher horse power cars."  The pit stop was completed without fail and Jackson was still in fifth place over all after all cars completed their stops.  However with the clutch situation worsening and track conditions drying Jackson had an even more difficult maintain track position.  Jackson said, "It was tough with the clutch slipping so bad but the car set up was  good so I just rolled into the turns, carried as much speed as I could and we finished the race very well."  The team ended up second in class at the end of the 1.5 hour Enduro.

The crew worked until late Saturday night to repair the crank case ventilation issue.  Jackson commented, "I don't think there was enough oil inside the clutch area to solve our National oil crisis but it was close.  We worked hard to complete repairs and and made some set up changes, we are ready for Sunday."

Sunday morning saw the #85 BMW placed fifth on the grid and with the clutch problem solved the team was poised for a strong run in the mid afternoon Enduro.  Homestead had dry conditions for the race and the crew set the car up accordingly.

The green flag saw Mauney make a position move from 5th to third and the team actual held the first position for one lap later in Mauney's first stint.  Mauney said, "The car was great.  The crew put together the best car of the season."  I was not real sure how everyone would react to an ITA car leading an FES race but it was all congratulations in the paddock."  On lap 11 The Motorsports-Group ITA BMW turned in the overall third best lap (146.378) of the race bettering their times from Saturday.  The lap may turn out to be a lap record for ITA Class at Homestead.  The battle continued and Jackson held onto the second place position but the ITA prep car did not have enough magic to beat Grand-Am Koni Cup prepped SPU Mazda of Ricky Diaz.  The second overall finish stunned the field of competitors at the event.  Jackson said, "Everything came into place for this weekends event and with a proper grid position at the start of the race we had the opportunity to show everyone what our team can do.  Even with a 23 year old car."

The race weekend was a success both from the racing and development stand points for Team Motorsports Group.  The Team Motorsports Group's season long project on their # 85 E30 2.7 liter BMW ITA racecar has paid off.

Mauney/Jackson struggle at Moroso but still podium and retain the FES Enduro ITA class lead

The MOTORSPORTS-GROUP Team driver's Jay Mauney and John Jackson entered their ITA class leading BMW in the SCCA Holiday Classic Double SARRC and Enduro weekend at Moroso Motorsports Park.

The race weekend was a success both from the racing and development stand points for Team Motorsports Group.  The Team Motorsports Group's month long project on their # 85 E30 2.7 liter BMW ITA racecar paid off.  TMG went into the weekend with a reduced body weight of 287 pounds, new ATL fuel cell to eliminate fuel delivery problems, a new engine that made nearly 15 additional Horse Power and a totally new rear suspension set up that included a new shocks, springs and brake package.  The crew knew this was a shake down race weekend and that their work was cut out for them.

Jackson entered the SARRC event but unfortunately, due to a ontrack incident involving four non TMG cars, the race ran all but two laps under full course caution.  The crew had very little information or time to dial in all the new suspension components.  The input Jackson was able to pass on during the race allowed Crew Chief Jay Mauney to calculate some "intellectual suspension set up changes".  These additional setup changes had to be completed in the :30 minute period after the SARRC race and before the pre-race grid ceremonies started.  All were completed in an organized but time constrained mad thrash just minutes prior to the start of the Enduro.  The #85 BMW handled flawlessly but engine computer problems caught up with the team and slowed the cars pace.  Mauney said,  "It really was a case of position by attrition as several other ITA teams ran into bigger problems."  Jackson said, "We will take the points however we can.  We are still in the points lead and the cars development has moved forward in a big way."   After a grueling 3 Hours, and most importantly no tire changes and just a safety splash of fuel, the team was again standing on the winners podium collecting a third place trophy.

Mauney/Jackson take 3rd straight ITA podium at Moroso Motorsports Park

The MOTORSPORTS-GROUP Team driver's Jay Mauney and John Jackson overcame an endless series of challenges to continue their domination of the ITA class at the SCCA  "Night" Enduro weekend at Moroso Motorsports Park.  The team, competing in Jackson's E30 2.7 liter BMW, took a second in class podium in Saturday's 3.0 Hour FES Enduros. Team driver Jay Mauney was the only person "left in the dark" with regards to a last minute race schedule change.  Jackson said, "When the vote was made to start the race at 3:10 pm verses the planned Night race my co-driver Mauney was flying from the Pro race at Watkins Glenn, NY.  I did not know if he would make to the track in time to make the race."

Mauney said, "The only night driving I would see was the trip to the airport at 5:00 am.   The event staff was great and I almost got checked in in time".  Jackson added, "What a day.  We started at the back of the pack due to a timing problems and Mauney barely makes it in time to see the start of the race", we have fuel pick up problems and a slipping clutch.   Jackson ran hard through the first stint and got the team car into the lead.  "I really was exhausted when I got out of the car.  We had to pit early due to fuel delivery problems so Mauney was still waiting on his equipment to arrive.  I was forced to pull a double stint." To further challenge the team a re-fueling problem during his first pit stop set the team back two laps.  Jackson's second stint saw him fight back to within a lap on the class leader when a slipping clutch slowed his fight to the front.  The next pit stop ran smoothly and Mauney was able to get back on the lead lap and behind the group leader and that team still had to make a mandatory pit stop during which time the Mauney would gain another lap.  An on track incident brought a full course yellow and the pace car. "It was perfect Mauney said.  "There was no way the leader could hold me off but the pace car gave a wave by to the leader trapping Mauney in slower traffic and giving the lead ITA car a free lap.  "That was tough to sit and watch, said Jackson.  My complaints went un heard so we went back down a lap."  "I knew Mauney would have to really baby the car with the slipping clutch but he continually turned in laps 3 seconds faster than the lead ITA car."  It was not enough however and the team finished a painful second in class.

Tuttle wins 5th straight pole and 5th overall win at Road Atlanta

The MOTORSPORTS-GROUP and Samax Motorsports took Brian Tuttle to his fifth straight SCCA road racing victory, taking pole and first overall at Road Atlanta during the July 21 - 22 Atlanta Region SARRC and Enduro.  The weekend proved to be very exciting from the first session out for Tuttle and the crew.  Tuttle, after being notified during qualifying that he was P2 by .001 seconds, made a last lap charge and secured the pole position.  The race on Sunday was just as exciting as the tracks first heavy rains in months put most sections of the road course in less than stellar conditions.  After falling back to third on the start, Tuttle made his move on lap 5 of the 15 lap event and by lap 10 earned a solid lead that he held until the checkered flag dropped, taking home the teams 5th straight victory.

Mauney/Jackson double up on SCCA Class wins at Miami-Homestead

The MOTORSPORTS-GROUP Team driver's Jay Mauney and John Jackson dominated the ITA class at the SCCA Double Enduro weekend at Miami-Homestead International Speedway.  The team, competing in Jackson's E30 2.7 liter BMW, took class victories in both Saturday's and Sunday's 1.5 Hour FES Enduros.  Mauney continued his streak of poles again putting down the fastest lap in the ITA class.  Mauney said, "It was a great weekend and it was good to be back in a race car, and in such a competitive class.  The Jackson/Mauney team stunned the competition beating out several ITS and SM cars to finish an impressive 6th overall on Saturday and 5th on Sunday.  This new team puts together two very fast and consistent drivers.  Jackson added, " I am looking forward to more races with Mauney.  We will dominate as a endurance team!

MOTORSPORTSGROUP crushes Daytona/SCCA Lap Record

The MOTORSPORTS-GROUP Team Driver J. Mauney crushed the previous SCCA P1 class record at Daytona in the SCCA Sunstroke Grand Prix Sunday Sprint Race. Mauney turned his record setting lap of 2:05:4 in the #39 RTR M3. The previous record of 2:10.5 was also set by Mauney back in August. Mauney attributes dropping his lap times by more than 5 seconds to the Pro level coaching he received from Ross Bentley, Data Acquisition Coaching with his crew and the selection of Yokohama Advan  A048 DOT tires.
